SOUTHERN TREASURE: RODDENBERRY'S CANE PATCH SYRUP

Do you want to know about the best thing to put on pancakes?

What blows the standard Maple crisp clear out of the water?

What makes your mouth and tummy go, 'ooh la la, hot damn!'

Why did i never know about this stuff before our pancake breakfast on Sunday, with a Southern friend?

I must make up for lost time by ordering some of this rich, robust, earthy-flavored, sauce of heroes  . . .

Have you heard of this darn good syrup?  From poking around a little bit, I can deduce that this product is made from cane syrup, water and sugar -- but the sum is truly greater than the parts!!  It's a taste of Southern magic, related to, but better than molasses.

It would be GREAT on a slice of cornbread -- it was lovely on the pancakes.  Thanks Pamela!

  1. Leela: Do you know how this compares to Lyle's Golden Syrup? Sounds like it's got more complexity, more bitterness? Love the label!

  10. There is a new syrup called Gilley's Cane Field Syrup. You can find it in small stores, here in Panama City they carry it at the Piggly Wiggly. Label looks just like Roddenberrys

    2. Definitely. Tastes just like it to me. I was raised on Cane Patch. So I have been looking for a new bottle for a while now. Bought it in Panama City. The label looks the same which drew my eye but different type bottle.

  25. I ate cane patch syrup because it was the closest to the syrup we made at our house in the 1960/1969 era , We mashed and cooked it for friends and neigbors too. NOW it cannot be found anywhere I look. I recently bought a bottle of so called cane syrup at a cider store only to take it home and find out it was damned MOLASSES. Took it back next day and almost had to fist fight the clerk to get my money back . No signs said no exchange or refund in sight. I guess I will have to cook some up on the stove top from sugar cane juice because I will be damned if I even try to swallow Miss Btrworth,Aunt Jemima, or any of that swill they make from corn and caramel color.Everyone over 50 is looking high and low for real cane syrup qnd we cannot find it. We are pissed off and hurt. Guess honey or maple time is here huh? Somebody find my cane patch PLEASE????

  26. Gilley's cane patch does not come close to being Roddenberry. It's not good at all and I paid $5 of a bottle. It not worth 2 cent. There are other here that have try Gilley's .They said one taste and in the trash it went.

  27. I totally agree! Not even close to Roddenberry!!!

  28. Grew up in Georgia and South Carolina. Like many others, I was raised on this syrup. Just went to get some at the local Piggly Wiggly and there was none. Not even a spot where it had been. Went to the next closest Piggly Wiggly and they too had none. Googled and found this site telling me it has been discontinued. I'm devastated! I'm texting everyone I know to check their local stores for me and buy any they find. I don't understand why this happened!?

  31. My family is very unhappy about the loss of our favorite Cane Patch Syrup. None of us eat maple. Roddenberry's is lighter and more buttery than Alaga. If they have relocated to another town, I would like to know the name of that company and if they will start to produce at the new place. We have pancakes every Saturday morning when we are camping and everyone eats at our place. We are having waffles tonight for supper, and it just won't be the same.

  32. I'm from a large family of former sharecroppers in rural Central Georgia. My daddy, his brothers, and all their large families of children grew everything that we consumed, including Sugar Cane. This time of year was always my favorite because of the butchering hogs and making syrup. Aince we all grew up and no longer farm, Cane Patch was the closest thing to the syrup that our family was well known for. Nothing else thst I have tasted even comes close because of incorrect way people cook it now. This looks like a good opportunity for our family to startup a Syrup Making business.

Sens me an email at bucks10th@gmail.com if interested in trying if we do start up. Will start a mailing list.

  35. Sad to hear this.. I love Steen's
cane syrup.. Made in Louisiana. I grew up on it but live in GA now and it isn't sold here and shipping is expensive, so I would get Roddenberry's because it was so similar. I was not aware that there is no more Roddenberry's. But yall should try Steen's, if you can afford the shipping. Amazon has it, or Cajun Grocer.

  36. Think the company who bought out Roddenberry's discontinued the BEST SYRUP ever made... CANE PATCH... I'm 80 years old and started on the journey with my mother having to put it in my bottle of milk to get me to drink the milk!!!!! Can't find, what a lost treasure!

  37. found my old bottle of Roddenberry's Cane Patch (washed and put away... what can I say... last bottle, lots of memories). the number on the bottle is: 1/800-236-1119 Bay Valley Foods... not sure they are still in business.

  38. https://cairogachamber.com/history/ So, so sad that Dean Foods decided to close the plant in 2003. I've tried MANY kinds of molasses but nothing compares in the least, to Roddenbery's Old Plantation Molasses! Still have the last (real empty) bottle in a case that my dear sister bought for me in NC as we couldn't get it in our FL stores. Just wrote to the folks who posted the article in the link above. Hoping to find someone who makes it, yet, in the same way that Mr. Roddenbery did!
